New app for calculating the effects of headwinds and tailwinds on running paces

I’m happy to share my newest web app: a headwind and tailwind calculator for calculating a wind adjustments for workout and race paces!

🍃 Check out my new wind calculator here! 🍃

This web app uses state-of-the-art scientific data to calculate how much headwinds and tailwinds will slow you down or speed you up. I have a very detailed companion article on the science of headwinds and tailwinds in running, which you can check out if you want to take a deep dive into the physics and biomechanics behind how the app actually works.

I validated this app by comparing its predictions against real metabolic data collected during treadmill running in a wind tunnel, and the results are super impressive—it’s accurate into headwinds of up to 20 miles per hour!

This app joins my two other free web apps—my pace percentage calculator and my grade-adjusted pace calculator—in the RW Apps section of Running Writings. These two have been very popular, so I’m thrilled to add another app to my collection.

You can bookmark this web app for future use, and you can even create a custom shortcut on iPhone or on Android to save it to your home screen.

I’d love to hear what you think of the app! If you have any feedback or if you find any bugs, leave a comment below or send me an email.

I’ve already got a few ideas for new apps that I’m working on, including a "track version" of this wind app, for windy track workouts and races, as well as a critical speed calculator!
