New app for calculating threshold, CV, and VO2max pace

I’m excited to share my latest web app: a calculator for threshold pace, CV pace, and VO2max pace!

📱 Check out my new threshold, CV, and VO2max calculator here! 📱

This calculator allows you to predict physiological training paces from any race distance from 800m to 10 km.

This app was developed by analyzing over 10,000 race performances using the critical speed model, the gold standard in physiology for determining metabolically stable and metabolically unstable paces.

The app also includes uncertainty ranges so you can get an idea of the range of different physiological profiles that you might find among runners at the same level of performance.

Below the app, you’ll find a detailed write-up of how it works and what differences you’ll notice between this app and other CV pace, threshold pace, and VO2max pace calculators and tables that you might’ve used in the past.

As with all of my apps, it is 100% free and open-source. If you find any bugs, have any suggestions for improvements, or spot something that doesn’t look right,  drop me an email.

New app for calculating the effects of headwinds and tailwinds on running paces

I’m happy to share my newest web app: a headwind and tailwind calculator for calculating a wind adjustments for workout and race paces!

🍃 Check out my new wind calculator here! 🍃

This web app uses state-of-the-art scientific data to calculate how much headwinds and tailwinds will slow you down or speed you up. I have a very detailed companion article on the science of headwinds and tailwinds in running, which you can check out if you want to take a deep dive into the physics and biomechanics behind how the app actually works.

Calculating the effect of headwinds and tailwinds on running pacing and performance

Headwinds and tailwinds are fundamentally an issue of air resistance and drag forces—physically pushing aside the air in front of you when you run imposes an additional energetic cost on your body. Air resistance is an issue even in calm conditions: the faster you run, the more costly it becomes to overcome air resistance, since you’re essentially creating a headwind for yourself.

🍃 This article explains the science behind my headwind and tailwind calculator. Check it out if you haven't already! 🍃

It’s super easy to use, but under the hood, it does some pretty sophisticated calculations. This article covers the science behind these calculations, and acts as a primer for understanding air resistance in running: where it comes from, how to calculate it, and how it’s affected by headwinds and tailwinds.

This article goes deep into the physics and bioenergetics behind air resistance in running. If all you want to do is calculate how headwinds and tailwinds affect your pacing, the web app is all you need. Otherwise, if you want to learn everything there is to know about air resistance in running, then buckle up!

Introducing Running Writings Apps and the workout pace percentage calculator

Screenshot of the Running Writings workout pace percentage calculator web app

This week I launched Running Writings Apps, a new platform for me to host some of my more technology-heavy running-related projects. During my PhD work I did a lot of data analysis and data visualization, and picked up some strong programming skills along the way. I’m excited to incorporate more of that alongside my long-form writing here.

This week I launched my first project: the Running Writings workout pace percentage calculator! Check it out!
