Podcast: Training, physiology, and resilience on That Triathlon Show

Last week I went on That Triathlon Show to chat about training, physiology, and some of the calculators I’ve developed for Running Writings.

Triathletes and triathlon coaches have great insights into physiological resilience, since it’s such a huge component of performance in events like the Ironman Triathlon, so there are some great insights in this show about developing the ability to finish strong in long races.

I really enjoyed our conversation and you should definitely check it out, even if (like me) you’re a terrible swimmer or cyclist!

Podcast: The root causes of running injuries with Run with Fitpage

I was on the Run with Fitpage podcast this week to chat with Fitpage.in founder Vikas Singh about the root causes of running injuries and what runners can do to prevent them.

This was a great return to my own roots of academic research on the biomechanics of running injuries. We got to chat about my favorite explanation for running injuries—the paperclip analogy—and were also able to chat about how to interpret some of the running dynamics data that come off your smartwatch.

I really liked Vikas' ideas about your "intensity age" too: I've always tried to think about a runner's "training age," in the sense of how many years of running they've done, but Vikas pointed out that many runners today have been running for several years, but are quite new to high-intensity workouts. So, differentiating runners along this dimension can be really useful!

You can find our conversation here on Apple Podcasts and here on Spotify. Enjoy the podcast!

Podcast: Chatting Aerobic Threshold, LT1, and Zone 3 on Strength Running

I had a great time on Jason Fitzgerald’s Strength Running Podcast chatting about the aerobic threshold, LT1, high-end aerobic running, and so-called "Zone 3 training"—a range of intensities that many people often deride as being "junk mileage."

On the podcast, I make the case that workouts in the high-end aerobic domain— including "Zone 3"— are an essential part of a strong overall training program. This was a super fun discussion, so check it out if you're interested! You can find the podcast here on Spotify and also here on Apple Podcasts.

Podcast: How to fuel for a marathon (plus show notes)

water bottle, banana, and running shoes

I recently appeared on Joe Sell's excellent Marathon Running Podcast for a second time to talk about fueling and nutrition for the marathon (see my first appearance here in case you missed it).

The impetus for this podcast was my recent blog post on how to plan fueling for elite marathoners who have "bottle service" at their race, but in the podcast we talk about fueling for all kinds of runners.

We had a great time and went really in-depth on the science behind optimal fueling (both hydration and sports drinks + gels) for marathoning. Check it out here!

Blog update and podcast/media roundup

Well, it’s been a while! As you may have noticed, Running Writings hasn’t seen an update in quite a while. Perhaps for good reason—I’ve been working on my PhD in biomechanics at Indiana University’s School of Public Health, which, as I’ve discovered, leaves very little time to spare.

Every time I think up an idea for a blog post (and I have had dozens!) I realize there’s one more dataset to analyze, one more paper to revise, one more grant to apply for, one more skill to learn. So, though RW hasn’t seen any updates, I haven’t dropped off the face of the earth, and I’ve been learning an incredible amount of new things about the science of running performance and running injuries. But all of that work keeps me very busy, and unfortunately I haven’t had much of a chance to share what I’ve been up to with the people who follow Running Writings.
